The feature race was won by Dutchman Nyck De Vries
The F2 World Championship has arrived at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps racetrack in Belgium this weekend. In the most extensive track of the calendar, the Brazilian driver Sérgio Sette Câmara (YOUSE | Banco BMG | MRV | CCR | CEMIG | GASMIG | Usiminas | Americanet | Lubrax), winner of one of the races there in 2017, repeated his good performance and returned to the podium with a celebrated second place.
Sette Câmara began his preparation on Friday when the free practice session was held. With the specialized work of the British team Carlin, the 20-year-old driver managed to guide the engineers to set up a fast and reliable car for the qualifying session.
When the session came, he secured third place on the grid with the mark of 1’56.594 for the start of the first race. This Saturday’s race was valid for the 17th stage of the Championship. After a perfect start, Sette managed to jump to the second place. The team’s strategy involved beginning with the super soft tyres, because of that, Sette could build a gap over the others, but could not get closer to the leader. After nine laps, the Carlin team called Sergio to pit. In a good pit work, the team managed to have the Brazilian return to the track without losing any position.
At this point, the first positions remained unchanged, but the safety car came in lap 15 because one of the cars had mechanical problems and had to be removed. Four laps later, with only six left to go, the race started again and Sérgio managed to stay in the second position. The leader managed to have a 2-second advantage over him when he began to impose a strong pace and, with that, he brought the difference down to almost to a second. The leader Nyck de Vries was under pressure, however, he managed to reopen the gap and, at the end of the 25 laps, managed to win the race. Sette Câmara, showing great maturity, came in second and Championship leader George Russell was third.
“I had a very good start. I kept the clutch at the ideal point, the car did not skid and with it, I gained the second place. After the pit stop, I was shortening the gap with de Vries, but the safety car joined the whole group again. In the restart, I accelerated well and two laps later, I had a very good pace, but, my competitor was in a better situation and managed to do quick laps again, preventing me from fighting for the victory. Second place was very good and very important for the Championship. We will do everything in tomorrow’s race, “said Sérgio Sette, who will start in seventh place in Sunday’s race.
The 18th stage of the F2 World Championship takes place this Sunday at 05:50 p.m., with a live broadcast by Sportv2. Fox Sports 2 will show the VT of the race at 10:15 a.m.
