The F2 World Championship was given the green light today and the only Brazilian in the category, the driver from Minas Gerais, Sérgio Sette Câmara (YOUSE | BMG | MRV | CCR | CBMM | CEMIG | GASMIG | COPASA) made a great recovery race and finished the first race of the weekend on the podium, in third place.
The disputes for this opening round of the F2 are being held at the Bahrain International circuit in the Middle East. The official activities began yesterday with a free practice, which was led by Sergio, and at the end of the day the qualifying session, when the Brazilian registered the eighth best time.
Disappointed with that result, but aware that he had a good car in his hands, he remained confident for the first race of the weekend.
At the start, after a problem in the clutch, Sergio did not get the ideal traction and, with that, lost several positions. In the second corner he was in 13th place. That did not discourage him and he continued doing his best on the track and started his recovery race. With three laps completed he was already in 11th. With an impressive pace, even faster than the leaders, Sergio was climbing up until reaching the sixth position, on the 16th lap. At that point the DAMS team called the # 5 car for the mandatory pit stop. In a perfect job the French team returned Sergio to the track in fifth place. He kept on the same good pace of the first set of tyres and at the end of the 32 laps, be completed the race in a much celebrated third position.
“I did a really good race. I knew our car was fast and I owe it to the great work our team has done since the pre-season tests. I had a problem in the clutch that I still do not know exactly what happened, I need to analyze the telemetry. That made me lose five positions at the start. But I kept myself focused, and from then on, I tried to be always on the edge and not to make mistakes. Overall I’m satisfied because I finished on the podium and, more than that, I guaranteed 15 points in the Championship, “said the DAMS driver.
This Sunday is the second race of the season. The start will be at 8:15 in the morning with SPORTV’s Live broadcast.
