New car from the F-1 feeder category impressed the Brazilian driver
Nearly 90 days after having taken part in his last official competition, the Brazilian driver Sergio Sette Câmara (YOUSE | CCR) had the long awaited chance of driving the new car of the F2 World Championship for the first time last Ash Wednesday.
The shakedown session, English name given to the time the teams have to check if everything is all right and well assembled with the new setup, took place at the French racetrack Magny Cours. The ten teams registered for this year’s Championship were able to take only one car to the track and one of the drivers had the opportunity to drive the car at different moments of the day.
After a very cold night, in the early hours of the morning, the escape areas of the track were completely covered by snow which melted during the course of the day and provided better working conditions for the teams and all drivers.
Sette Camera took the cockpit of his Carlin / McLaren Junior only in the afternoon. Anxious to go back to racing and to feel the big differences, especially regarding the new turbo engine, the gearbox and the aerodynamic part, the driver completed approximately 20 laps and was very satisfied with the car’s progress compared to the setup he competed with in 2017.
“I found the car extremely fast at low speeds, the force when the turbo kicks in is impressive. At the race start the difference is brutal. Besides, with the new aerodynamic components, the car has more downforce which allows us to achieve greater speed in the corners. So, even with the set being 30 kg heavier than last year, Dallara engineers believe that the new car will average a second faster depending on the circuit. The Halo, which many said would interfere negatively, in my impression was like wearing a pair of glasses. At the time you leave the box it bothers a bit, but then it becomes natural, “commented the only Brazilian driver in the category.
However, Sette Camara mentions that the biggest innovation of the new car is the technological part. “For me, the most significant change was the technological one. The new car is much closer to an F-1 now, not just in the engine, gear and aerodynamic part, but also in electronics. The new steering wheel reminded me a lot of what I used when I had my test with Toro Rosso in 2016. Now we have the chance to change the way we accelerate, change clutch settings and various other things that have not even been presented to us yet. In last year’s car, the only thing we could alter was the brake balance. Thus, the races will be even more demanding on us since, at the click of a button on the wheel, we will have the real chance to change the setup of the car with every lap, thus making the car have something closer to an ideal setting at the different moments of the race. I’m sure any F2 driver with this change will be better prepared to take an F-1 test than before, “the 19-year-old finished.
The pre-season of the F-2 World Championship will be held in two sessions. The first one, in Paul Ricard (France) between March 6th and 8th. The second session, also three days, will be in Bahrain, between March 21 and 23 .
